After leading 3-2 entering the fifth inning, the Dukes pitching staff was unable to keep the Roadrunner bats quiet in a 14-3 loss. The loss drops Cumberland to 4-3 in Region 19 and 17-5 overall.
RCGC took an early 2-0 lead on a two run double to right field in the bottom of the second inning. The Dukes then answered with one run in the top of the third on an rbi double from sophomore Jake Carr that scored fellow sophomore Tyler Mixon who also reached on a double. The visiting team scored two more in the top of the fourth. Corniell led the inning off with a single and later scored on a Raul Perez single. Third Basemen Justin Geri then scored on an rbi single from Mixon who finished Thursday win a run scored and an RBI.
Then it all went downhill for the Dukes. With the bases loaded from a single and two walks, the Roadrunners tied the game on a wild pitch and then took a 5-3 lead on a ground out to second followed by an rbi single from Matt Lang. The Roadrunners were back at it again in the sixth, adding four runs, three on a monster home run from Catcher Jon Gonzalez to break the game open.
The Dukes will look to rebound from an uncharacteristic loss when they host a three-game set against Quinsigamond Community College (MA) beginning on Friday at 4PM. Games two and three will take place on Saturday with the first pitch being thrown at 11AM.
