On a day the Baseball Program honored Devin McCann, a member of the Dukes 2014 Region Championship Team, the Dukes split a DH with Northampton CC. In Devin's honor, his father Dan McCann threw out the ceremonial first pitch.
In Game 1, Chris Salvey, a high school teammate of McCann's, launched a solo shot in the third inning to push the Dukes early lead to 3-0. The visiting Spartans scored two late runs in the seventh and threatened to take the lead when Calvin Clark got the final batter to pop out for the 3-2 win. Sophomore Matt Colon (6-1) picked up the win on the bump, throwing six innings, surrendering two runs on four hits while striking out four. Six different batters recorded a hit for Cumberland, with John Schoelkopf and Nick Ferrett scoring the other two runs for the home team.
After jumping out to a 3-1 lead in the second game of the doubleheader, Northampton used two runs in the sixth and one in the seventh to upend the Dukes. Mitch Walker hit 2 for 3 with a run scored and 3 RBI including a homerun in the losing effort.
Today's doubleheader featured a preview of a potential Region 19 playoff matchup between the nation's second ranked team in Cumberland and the ninth ranked Spartans of Northampton Community College. The split put the Dukes season record at 24-9 and Northampton now sits at 20-4 overall.
