Sophomore Nick Caregnato is the latest member of the Dukes Baseball Program to sign an NCAA Division I National Letter of Intent. Caregnato will be continuing his academic and baseball career at North Carolina Central University, a member of the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC).
In 2016, Caregnato became the go-to man out of the bullpen for the Dukes, recording a 5-1 record in relief. In 44 total innings, Caregnato struck out 40 total batters while recording an ERA of 3.27. Prior to attending Cumberland, Caregnato did not recieve any scholarship offers out of Buena Regional High School.
"I am very proud of the progress Nick has made in his two years at Cumberland. He has gone from an unrecruited high school senior to a Division 1 scholarship athlete in two years." Commented Head Baseball Coach Keith Gorman. "He has accomplished this through his hard-work in the classroom, weightroom and on the field. North Carolina Central University is getting a great student, athlete and young man. Nick will continue to make this college and our alumni proud well into the future."
Caregnato became the third member of the 2016 sophomore class to accept a scholarship with an NCAA Division I institution. He joins fellow hurlers Will Latcham (Coastal Carolina) and Matt Colon (James Madison), who signed with their respective school in the Fall.
