Cumberland Tops Ocean in Double Overtime Thriller

Cumberland Tops Ocean in Double Overtime Thriller

Although it wasn't pretty, Cumberland outlasted Ocean and was able to pull away in the second overtime for an 80-71 victory resulting in just their second win of the season.  Cumberland had a chance to win at the end of regulation tied at 57 but a Donnel Sloan prayer fell short as time expired.  At the end of the first overtime, Ocean had the opportunity to end the game but a long three point attempt went long and the two teams went to another overtime tied at 63.  In the second overtime, Cumberland exploded for 17 points over that five minute span.  Freshman Matthew Lewis hit two huge three point baskets on consecutive possessions and Tyler Hillgrube completed a three point play to put some distance between Cumberland and Ocean.  Sophomore Dalton Sterling (Vineland HS) carried the Dukes in the second half and was effective in the overtime periods.  Sterling had a monster game, finishing with 28 points and 15 rebounds.  Lewis finished with 16 points including 4 three-pointers.  Hillgrube finished with 16 points and 10 rebounds, with 9 of those points coming in the two overtime periods.  Cumberland overcame 26 team turnovers to pull out the heart-pumping victory.
