Dukes Softball Takes Two From RCGC, Cornman Joins 100 Hit Club

The Dukes took Game 1 2-0 and Game 2 by a score of 2-1 in a doubleheader sweep over Rowan College at Gloucester County.  This was the first time the two teams met since last year's District Championship Series.

In Game 1, Cumberland struck first in the third inning of play on a sacrifice fly from Lauren Tobolski that scored Courtney Weems.  The Dukes added another run in the fourth on an RBI single up the middle by pitcher Rosalie LaGrotta, scoring Samantha Sleister from second.  Sleister led off the bottom half of the fourth with a double to the deep part of left field.  Sophomore Danielle Cornman collected her 100th career hit in a 1 for 3 performance at the plate.

In the second game, the Dukes used a two run fifth innings to come from behind and secure the sweep.  Weems started the fifth inning noise with a single up the middle.  The sophomore and Millville native then stole second and scored the tying run on a Carly DiDonna single past the diving effort of the RCGC shortstop.  DiDonna scored the go-ahead and eventual game-winning run two batters later on a wild pitch.  Weems finished the day 3 for 5 with two runs scored.

In the circle, LaGrotta put together a masterful performance, going the distance in both games.  The sophomore hurler pitched all fourteen innings Thursday afternoon, allowing only one RCGC player to cross the plate.  LaGrotta surrendered four hits in each game and recorded three strikeouts on the day.

The two wins extended the Dukes current win streak to seven games and improved their record in Region 19 play to 6-0.  Cumberland will hit the road this weekend for doubleheaders at Sussex County Community College on Saturday and at Northampton Community College on Sunday.
