The three leading scorers for the Cumberland Women's Basketball team: Alicia Cox, Tess Elder, and Kyra Lunsford have been the driving force for Dukes this year. This trio has helped Cumberland reach the first Region XIX semi-final appearance in program history. Wednesday morning, these three ladies were recognized for their efforts.
Sophomore Tess Elder was named to the Garden State Athletic Conference 2nd Team and Region XIX 3rd team. Freshman Kyra Lunsford earned 3rd team All-Conference. Together, Elder and Lunsford are combining for 5 triples per game and 24 points per game. They are the perfect outside threats in an offense centered around dribble penetration led by the next lady.
Alicia Cox highlighted the bunch by earning three different honors, the most prominent was being named Garden State Athletic Conference player of the year. She was also named to the first-team for both the GSAC and for all of Region XIX. These recognitions capped off a sensational regular season for Cox, averaging 19.5 points, 8 rebounds, 7.2 steals and 4 assists. She was named conference player of the week four times and national player of the week twice.
Despite the individual honors dished out on Wednesday, this terrific trio can all agree on one thing. The recognition means a lot but they all have their eyes set on more team-oriented goal: capturing a Region XIX title. Cumberland plays in the Region XIX Semi-Final Thursday afternoon at Brookdale Community College at 3:15pm.
