Beginning on Saturday, January 26 through Friday, February 1, the Student Life & Athletics department at Cumberland County College will be holding a Food Drive, in conjunction with Philabundance, for Furloughed Federal Employees. The idea began when department administrator, Jean Erwin, and Assistant Director of Student Life & Athletics, Jonathan Dijamco, were discussing the ongoing government shutdown and how it was affecting their friends and family.
The Federal Government had been shutdown for 35 days, the longest in history, affecting approximately 800,000 federal workers who did not receive any paychecks for month of January. On January 25, a temporary budget was passed to reopen the government for the following three weeks as negotiations will continue regarding the federal budget. Federal employees and their families will still feel the effects from the shutdown as their pay will still need to be calculated over the next few days before they receive their next pay check.
"Quite simply, we just wanted to help." Dijamco said. "Whenever you see a neighbor in need, the right thing to do is to help them. That's what we plan to do with this food drive."
Those looking to donate can do so on the CCC campus by dropping off a non-perishable food item to the offices of Student Life or Athletics. Attendees for the home CCC Men's Basketball games on January 29 and January 31 who donate an item at each game will receive free admission. Both games are at 7 PM.
