A moment years in the making, RCSJ-Cumberland will honor legendary coach, Wally Nelson, with a ceremony scheduled for Friday, September 20, 3 PM in the Athletics Team Room. Nelson coached the Cumberland County College Basketball and Baseball teams nearly 50 years ago when they were originally named the Trojan Cagers. Many alumni and former athletes credit Coach Nelson for pioneering the Athletics Department at Cumberland, as he mentored numerous alums well beyond their time.
"This is something we have been wanting to do for Wally for some time now." Former player Dale Elbeuf continued, "He deserves this and we thank the Cumberland Athletic Department along with my alumni friends and teammates for setting this up." Alumni relations is very important to RCSJ-Cumberland Athletic Director, Jonathan Dijamco. "We are very excited for our institution as I believe we are headed to new heights." He continued, "However, Cumberland County College, the name and institution, meant a lot to our community and our alumni. Wally is part of the fabric of our Athletic Department so getting this in order was very important to us."
The ceremony is scheduled to begin Friday, September 20 at 3 PM in the Athletics Team Room adjacent from the Cunnigham Center.
