Opposing hitters beware. Cody Stashak started off the year in what appeared to be mid-season form, going the distance and tossing a no-hitter in the first game of the 2014 campaign. Over seven innings of work, Stashak walked four batters and struck out 8 on the way to an 8-0 victory over Delaware Technical and Community College Saturday afternoon. Stashak, who ended last season with a 6-3 record and a 3.74 ERA, was cruising in the high 80's to low 90's on his way to his first win of the year.
The right-hander received some help from his lineup, with 8 runners crossing the plate on 16 hits. Sophomore Tim Gallagher went 4 for 5 at the dish, scoring one run and driving in a run and Sophomore Catcher Jose Martinez went 3 for 4 with 2 RBIs.
In the second game of the double header, the Dukes gave up an 8 run lead in the 6th inning and dropped the game in extra innings 9-8. Sophomore Devin McCann hit 3 for 4 in the batter's box, with 2 RBIs and one run scored in the losing effort. With a 1-1 start to the season, Cumberland will host Mercer County Community College on Wednesday. The first pitch will be thrown at 3pm.
