Cumberland Men, Women Sweep Vikings

With two convincing wins, the Cumberland men's and women's basketball teams put together a sweep of Ocean County College Thursday night.  In the first game, the Lady Dukes jumped all over the Vikings out of the gate and never let up on their way to a 104-51.

Sophomore Jasmine Miro led all players with 25 points, connecting on 8 of 15 shooting from downtown.  Fellow Sophomore Caroline Santiago posted a double-double with 22 points and 16 rebounds.  Four other Dukes finished the game with double-digit scoring outputs: Jovan Childers (16), Sahara Lopez (15), Tamyra Smith (13), and Iesha Watson (13).  In addition to the 13 points, Smith recorded a career-high 6 blocks.

The Men followed up a runaway win for the women with a 96-81 victory of their own to stop a two-game skid.  The Dukes got back on the right track behind two outstanding double-double performances from freshmen Markevis Johnson and Terron Mitchell.  Johnson, the Wilmington, DE native, got back to his shooting ways Thursday, knocking down five shots from three-point land and going a combine 9 of 16 from the floor.  Johnson also added a season-high 10 rebounds to tally his first double-double of the season.  Following the trend of season-highs, Mitchell scored 20 points behind an efficient 9 of 13 performance from the floor, and added 12 rebounds.  Fellow freshmen Khaliq Ford and Seth Hackett each scored 15 apiece.

The Men's victory could not have come at a better time.  After dropping two straight conference games, the Dukes were able to stop the bleeding and get back above .500 with seven games left to play.  The Lady Dukes victory marked their 15 win of the season as they improved to 15-1 overall.  The Women will travel down to Maryland for two games over the weekend with games at Prince George's Friday night and Howard CC Saturday afternoon.
