The Dukes put up a season high 23 runs on their way to a rout of Atlantic Cape Community College Wednesday afternoon. They used an eight-run first inning to jump start the game, with a total of 14 batters coming to the plate.
Sophomore Mitch Walker, Cumberland's DH on the afternoon, launched a three-run shot over the left-center wall to kick-off the scoring. Fellow sophomores Marco Rios and Tovine Potts were on base for Walker from a Rios lead-off walk and a Potts single up the middle. Potts finished 1 for 3 with two runs and 2 RBIs, and Rios reached base three times, scoring three runs and driving in a pair.
The first inning rally continued with back-to-back singles from Anthony Harrold and Chris Salvey, followed by speedster Josh Martinez, who legged out a double that plated Harrold. After catcher Ivan Solis was hit by a pitch, outfielder Tom Burns ripped a 2 RBI single into right to bring home Martinez and Salvey. Salvey continued his hot streak of late with a 4 for 4 performance with four runs scored and one run-batted-in. The sophomore slugger also collected his 100th career hit in a Dukes uniform during his third at-bat of the day.
The final two runs of the marathon first inning came off of Atlantic Cape fielding errors. The Cumberland lineup was at it again in the second, this time adding five more to the scoreboard. Solis and Burns each drove in runs with RBI singles and Walker was at it again, connecting on a 2-run double that hit off the left-field wall. Walker finished 2 for 4 with 5 RBIs.
On the mound, Nick Bralczyk picked up the win, allowing two earned runs in 5 and 1/3. He added five strikeouts, and freshman Brandon Staub finished off a scoreless 1 and 2/3 innings to cap the afternoon.
Cumberland has now won 25 consecutive games and sits at a remarkable 33-3 on the season. The Dukes are 17-0 in Region XIX play and sit atop the Garden State Athletic Conference at 9-0. They will square off with Bergen CC in a three-game series starting this Friday. The two teams will play a single 9-inning game at Bergen on Friday, before finishing the series at Cumberland with a double header Saturday afternoon.
