2019 Region XIX DIII Softball Tournament set to begin

On Saturday, May 11, the Region XIX Division 3 Softball Tournament will begin on the campus of Cumberland County College. The top 4 seeds all advanced as Brookdale, Cumberland, Lehigh Carbon, and Rowan-Gloucester will all vie for a chance to compete for a National Championship.  The NJCAA DIII Softball National Tournament will be held in Rochester, MN on May 23-25.

Below will be a snapshot preview of each team.

1 Seed - Brookdale Jersey Blues - Overall 40-9 - Region XIX 17-1

The Jersey Blues enter the 2019 Final Four just as they did a year ago, as the overall number 1 seed. Their potent offense is led by Tori Lucarelli (74 hits) and Liz Dorsa (67), however, the shining star of the lineup is a record-breaking freshman 3B. Shakyra Moore enters her first postseason with an eye-popping 23 home runs and 75 RBIs to just 5 strikeouts. She currently holds a .451 average while slugging 1.042.

In the circle, Brookdale is led by the duo of Jessica Pszeniczny and Katy McGovern. The high impact pair is a combined 34-7, with Pszeniczny (21-4) tallying 16 complete games and a 2.30 ERA.

2 Seed - Rowan-Gloucester Roadrunners - Overall 31-13 - Region XIX 18-2

The RCGC Roadrunners return to the Region XIX Final Four as the second seed. The perennial contender is led offensively by Jackie Lesher (59 hits) and Kelsea Murphy (55 hits). Murphy leads the team in home runs (4), triples (8), and is third in doubles (14) while sporting a team-high .447 average.

In the circle, Jackie Lesher does not take a break. Shes leads the Roadrunner pitching staff in all categories with 17 wins and 102 strikeouts. The primetime sophomore carries a 17-7 record to the Final Four that includes 4 saves.

3 Seed - Lehigh Carbon Cougars - Overall 28-9-1 - Region XIX 14-3-1

The upstart Cougars also return to the Region XIX Final Four, this time as the third seed. The defending District F Champion hope to prove last year was not a surprise with Mackenzie Guzy and Shannon Gallagher leading the way offensively. Guzy has tallied 60 hits so far in 2019 and carries a shining .522 average into the final four. Gallagher is a hit shy from tying Guzy for the team lead in hits, but leads the team in home runs (8), RBIs (49), and doubles (17).

Gallagher's leadership does not end on offense, as she is the leader of the pitching staff with 178 IP. She brings to the Final Four a 21-9 record, 3.93 ERA, and 85 total strikeouts.

4 Seed - Cumberland Dukes - Overall 21-15-1 - Region XIX 14-7-1

The surprise Dukes return to the Region XIX Final Four for the first time since 2016 where they were a win shy of repeating as Region XIX Champions. The Dukes carry a balanced offense, but the undoubted leader of the group is freshman Alyse Jackson. Jackson enters the Final Four as the hits leader with 76 hits so far in 2019 along with a sterling .633 batting average. She also leads the team in home runs (6), doubles (27), RBIs (59), and tied for triples (8).

In the circle, the Dukes are carried by the duo of Megan Culley and Breanna Suppi. Culley leads the staff in innings pitched with 108.2, ERA with a 2.65 average, Strikeouts with 94, and wins with 10. Additionally, she pitched the team's lone no-hitter earlier this season. Suppi has equally been as masterful with a 5-2 record and a 7.1 K/7 average.
