Cumberland County college Softball's cinderella season came to an end on Saturday. The number one seeded, Brookdale Jersey Blues, halted the Dukes's dream season by sweeping the District E Championship Series, 2 games to none.
In Game 1, the Dukes came out swinging by scoring two runs in the top of the 1st to take a 2-0 lead. However, the vaunted Brookdale offense would not be shaken by the early onslaught from Cumberland as they would go on to score 2 runs in each of the next four innings to take a commanding 8-2 lead. That score would hold as the Jersey Blues took game 1, 8-2.
Game 2, Cumberland did not let up as their pitching and defense took center stage. The Dukes ace, Megan Culley, dueled with Brookdale pitcher Katy McGovern as both pitchers kept the opponent off the board for 5 1/2 innings. Tori Lucarelli of the Jersey Blues led off the 6th inning with a double which would be followed with a Shakyra Moore RBI to give Brookdale the 1-0 lead. A passed ball later in the inning would give Brookdale a 2-0 lead that they would not relinquish.
Cumberland ends the season with a 22-17-1 record, their best finish since 2016.
