In the final home game for 5 sophomores, the Cumberland County College Women's Basketball Team galloped their way past the Montgomery County Community College Mustangs 70-50, to secure a berth in the Region XIX playoffs.

Destiny Esquilin scored 23 points and dished out 4 assists to pace the Lady Dukes to a well-deserved victory. SyDonnie Dawkins and Lynn Brown let their presence be known adding monster double-doubles as they combined to score 27 points and grab 29 rebounds.

In the first few minutes of the game CCC eked out to an 11-9 lead as the two teams traded buckets back and forth. At 4:37 left in the quarter, Esquilin scored 6 points to spark a 12-5 run and extend the Lady Dukes lead, 23-14.

In the second, the offense seemed to hibernate, which allowed the Lady Mustangs to creep back in the game scoring 8 unanswered points, including 2 triples by Anna Morgan, to close the gap and make the score 25-19. CCC responded, putting the clamps on MCCC to force 4 turnovers in a span of 2 minutes, while countering with 12 unanswered points of their own.

The Lady Dukes led 37-25 at the half.

Brown and Dawkins emerged as unstoppable forces in the second half, scoring point after point, and grabbing rebound after rebound for the Lady Dukes. Dawkins finished the contest with 15 points and 13 rebounds, while Brown chipped in with 12 points and 16 rebounds of her own.

Esquilin put on a dazzling display for those in attendance over the final 5 minutes of the game, scoring 8 consecutive points and collecting a steal to ice the game.

This was the last home game for sophomores Kiarah Brathwaite, Brown, Haley Drinks, Janika Echevarria, and Sara Mazzeo.

After a rocky start to the season, the Lady Dukes put themselves in a precarious position by losing 10 out of their first 13 games. In the face of adversity, the Dukes persevered to climb out of the early hole, and will now be participating in the playoffs with a Region XIX Championship in their sights.

The playoff game will be this Saturday February 25th, with the opponent and site yet to be determined. The Region XIX Committee is in the process of finalizing the seeds and match-ups for the postseason tournament.
