Cumberland Discards Bergen, Advances to Region XIX Final Four

With a 12-2 victory, Cumberland used the ten-run mercy rule after five innings to advance to the Region XIX Championship Weekend.  Cumberland joins Brookdale, Gloucester, and Ocean in the Final Four.  It was all chalk in the first round with the top four seeds advancing.

In Game 2 of the series between Bergen and Cumberland, the host jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first, and then poured on the runs in the second inning, scoring nine runs in the bottom half of the frame on six hits.  The visiting Bulldogs didn't help their own cause, committing three errors during that inning.

After Devin McCann reached on one of those errors, Just Geri bunted for a base hit, paving the way for a 2 RBI triple laced by Anthony Lopez.  That triple was Anthony's sixteenth of the season extending his NJCAA Division III record.

Lopez scored the next at-bat as Jordan Glover reached on another Bergen error.  After a single and a walk, freshman Tyler Mixon delivered a line-drive single into center field bring home Glover and Jose Maritinez, who got on with that single. Mixon finished the day 3 for 3 with one run scored and three runs-batted-in.

Another single loaded the bases for McCann who laced a a ball to deep center-field that rolled to the fence for a bases clearing triple to cap off the scoring in the second.  The Dukes added another run in the third on an RBI single from starting pitcher Cody Stashak.

It was a hit-parade type of day and the #1 ranked Dukes showed why opposing teams can't afford to make mistakes with such potent offensive lineup.  All nine starters scored at least one run with the top three hitters, (Gallagher, Lopez, and Glover) each scoring twice. Starting pitcher Stashak went 4 innings, only allowing two hits and striking out six.

The four teams: #1 Cumberland, #2 Gloucester, #3 Ocean, and #4 Brookdale will play for the Region XIX Championship in a double elimination style tournament over a three-day span beginning Friday May 9th.  Cumberland the overall #1 seed will now play the #4 seed and tournament host Brookdale Community College on their home-field.  The game is set to start at 12PM Friday afternoon.
