Big innings sink Baseball, drop series opener to Brookdale
VINELAND - The Dukes started their Region XIX opener with a big bang as they scored 6 first inning runs to take a 6-0 lead over the visiting Brookdale Jersey Blues. Cumberland took advantage of defensive miscues by Brookdale by way of RBI singles by Tyler Bunting and Cole Shover. David Rodriguez grounded into a double play that scored the 6th run for Cumberland.
Brookdale would answer with 9 runs in the top of the 2nd and would not surrender the lead as they tacked on 4 more in the top of the 3rd and one more in the 5th to complete the scoring for the day. The Dukes would add a run in the bottom of the 6th as David Rivas stole second, then stole 3rd where the catcher overthrew the bag allowing Rivas to score Cumberland's 7th run of the day.
Xavier Anglero started for the Dukes but gave way to Kyle Kennedy who took the hard luck loss. Dukes travel to Lincroft tomorrow for a doubleheader against the Jersey Blues beginning at 12 PM.
